The Story Behind the Tom Pondoff Eleven Foundation
Tom Pondoff was larger than life.
He was the kind of man who could light up any room the moment he walked into it. Funny without trying, magnetic without effort, Tom carried an energy that drew people toward him everywhere he went. He loved people deeply, loved to laugh even harder, and never missed an opportunity to sit down with someone over a VO and club soda and make them feel like they mattered.
To many, Tom was the life of the party. To his children, Chris and Brooke, he was the center of the universe.
Born and raised in East St. Louis and Belleville, Illinois, Tom grew up tough, charismatic, competitive, and endlessly entertaining. He was a standout hockey player, a relentless class clown, and someone who naturally became the heartbeat of every locker room and gathering he entered. Hockey remained one of the great loves of his life long after his playing days ended, as he continued refereeing games throughout the St. Louis region for years.
But beneath Tom's humor, work ethic, and larger-than-life personality was a level of pain that few people fully understood.
When Tom was only nine years old, his older brother Johnny Pondoff — his hero and idol — was killed in Vietnam. The loss shaped him forever. Like many men of his generation, Tom rarely spoke openly about grief, trauma, or emotional pain. Instead, he carried it quietly while continuing to work hard, show up for others, and push forward.
Years later, tragedy struck again.
When Chris was eight years old, Tom took Chris and two of his friends to race go-karts one evening. During that outing, one of the boys was tragically killed in an accident. Tom carried the guilt and heartbreak from that night for the rest of his life.
Still, he kept moving.
He built a successful business. He provided for his family. He remained devoted to his children. He became the father who was always there — at the rink, at home, in the middle of everyday life. Chris rarely left his father's side growing up. Their bond was inseparable.
But over time, the weight of unresolved trauma, mounting stress, marital struggles, and the pressures of running a business began to take a deeper toll.
What began as alcohol use eventually evolved into self-medication through cocaine addiction.
Like many families affected by addiction, the struggle was complicated. There was love inside the home. There was laughter. There were successes. There were memories that still shine brightly. But there was also pain, secrecy, exhaustion, and a growing darkness underneath it all.
On May 12, 2012, Tom Pondoff died suddenly at the age of 54 from a cocaine-induced heart attack.
His death devastated his family.
For Chris, losing his father meant losing the person he had built his entire world around. Their relationship had been rooted in fierce loyalty, love, and a "work hard, play hard" culture that included drinking together and eventually substance use together. When Tom died, Chris spiraled into profound grief and addiction himself, drinking nearly a gallon of whiskey a day while hoping he would not wake up the next morning.
For nearly two years, life became survival. Then one sentence changed everything.
At the height of Chris's downward spiral, his younger sister Brooke told him she needed him alive so he could one day walk her down the aisle now that their father was gone. Those words planted a seed that would ultimately save his life.
On March 25, 2014, Chris entered rehab.
Through recovery, faith, grief work, and rebuilding his life piece by piece, Chris began transforming unimaginable loss into purpose. He came to understand something deeply personal and painfully universal:
Many people struggling with addiction are not bad people. They are wounded people. They are grieving people. They are people carrying trauma they never learned how to speak about.
The Tom Pondoff Eleven Foundation was created to honor both the joy and the pain of Tom's story.
It exists to help individuals and families impacted by addiction find hope, support, stability, and long-term recovery. It exists to help people rebuild their lives before another family receives the phone call that changes everything forever.
Tom Pondoff was not defined solely by addiction.
He was a loving father. A proud hockey guy. A businessman. A storyteller. A protector. A friend. A man who made people laugh. A man who loved deeply while silently battling demons of his own.
Today, his legacy lives on not through the way he died, but through the lives that may now be saved because of his story.
